Grid Tie and Off Grid Inverters

Inverters are used to convert DC power into standard AC power found in your home or office. Inverters are powered from a battery bank (12/24/48 VDC) or renewable energy source (solar or wind) and typically provide 120 or 240 VAC, 50 or 60 Hz power.

Off Grid Inverters

Typically used in locations where grid power is not available (remote homes, monitoring stations, RV's, boats). Two topography of inverters are available: modified or pure sine wave versions. Modified sine wave (lower-cost units) are typically used when raw power is needed to run items such as motors, refrigeration, air conditioning and light bulbs, while a pure sine wave inverters (higher cost units) are used for operating electronics (TVs, computers, DVD players, microwave, etc.). These are available in 150W to 4000W in size.

Grid Tie Inverters

Typically used in locations where grid power is available. These are pure sine wave inverters connected directly to the local grid power. Two types are available, with or without battery backup. Units without battery backup will be connected to solar panels or wind turbines to provide supplementary power to the property thereby reducing energy costs, but provide no emergency power if the grid is lost. Inverters with battery backup may or may not be connected to solar or wind renewable energy systems, but are designed to provide emergency power when the grid is lost and are usually connected to a priority load electrical panel. Many Grid Tie inverters have a built-in battery charger for replenishing the energy to the battery bank when grid power is available or are supplemented from a solar or wind energy system. These inverters are typically available in 1500W or higher ratings, for both single (residential) and three phase (commercial) power.
